    " Uncle's Army

SIR - The death of Clive Dunn (Obituaries, November 8), who was much loved as Lance-Corporal Jones in Dad's Army, reminds me of a conversation I had with my uncle, Robert Bridgeman, who had been GSO1 (chief of staff) on General Lord Gort's staff in the British Expeditionary Force in 1940 and after Dunkirk, was given the job, as a major general, of Director-General of the Home Guard until its disbandment in 1945.

When Dad's Army was created, he was asked after the 12 or so initial episodes to become a technical advisor, to ensure the authenticity of the series. He told me: "I was not able to give them very much help - except to assure them that it was cruelly accurate!"
