from the guardian.
It was seen as one of the most distressing effects of climate change ever recorded: polar bears dying of exhaustion after being stranded between melting patches of Arctic sea ice.
But now the government scientist who first warned of the threat to polar bears in a warming Arctic has been suspended and his work put under official investigation for possible scientific misconduct.
Charles Monnett, a wildlife biologist, oversaw much of the scientific work for the government agency that has been examining drilling in the Arctic. He managed about $50m (£30.5m) in research projects.
Some question why Monnett, employed by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, has been suspended at this moment. The Obama administration has been accused of hounding the scientist so it can open up the fragile region to drilling by Shell and other big oil companies.
"You have to wonder: this is the guy in charge of all the science in the Arctic and he is being suspended just now as an arm of the interior department is getting ready to make its decision on offshore drilling in the Arctic seas," said Jeff Ruch, president of the group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. "This is a cautionary tale with a deeply chilling message for any federal scientist who dares to publish groundbreaking research on conditions in the Arctic."
The group filed an official complaint on Monnett's behalf on Thursday, accusing the government of persecuting the (PDF) scientist and interfering with his work. It seeks his reinstatement and a public apology.

Here's another nail in the coffin of the man-made global warning, this time from NASA satellites -
"NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth's atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted... the study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed."

The Australian government is convinced that industrial chemical agents are responsible for damaging the ozone layer above the Antarctic, causing climatic changes in Australia.
There is an international law preventing the exploitation of the Antarctic continent. No such law exists for the Arctic, which is a sea with a considerable layer of ice.
Chemical agents released from oil refineries can cause an effect on the atmosphere thousands of miles away from the refineries, such as in the polar regions and, possibly, in the Golf of Mexico, as well as Australia.
As for oil-drilling, this usually includes the discovery of gas near the oil fields, with an aditional set of complications and risks.
If there were a disaster in the Arctic region such as the one that hit the Golf of Mexico last year, when an oil-rig leaked oil into the sea, this could have an effect on the Antarctic ice.
Force 5 hurricanes and giant tornados have been hitting the USA with increased frequency, so perhaps the American Administration should consider carefully any plans to drill for oil in the Arctic region.

do you think that climate change is man made keith.
the evidence is moving away from that conclusion.

When cannabis was first made illegal in the USA a whole series of studies into it were commissioned, with about 54 saying that it was not addictive and had medical benefits. 3 said it was a harmful narcotic and the banning went ahead. Any hope of protecting whats left of the earth appears to be going the same way.

Is it just possible that some of the less than effective measures some of us are trying to put in place may have had some effect in slowing the destruction of our world? Why are people so hell-bent on disbelieving that which is inconvenient?

maybe because governments are using the issue as a tool to tax their citizens?
the majority of people are not joining in, car use is slightly down due to high fuel prices, leading to higher bus use.
people fly slightly less for the same reason not because of environmental concerns.
a lot of statistics that were taken as read a while back are now being looked at close up and are not seen as gospel.

Statistics have always been able to tell whatever story wished of them. More worrying is that visible evidence such as retreating glaciers is ignored or excuses made. More melting ice in the Arctic cools the North Atlantic and pushes the warming gulf steam further south leading to cooler winters and more erratic weather in Britain. Of course we haven't seen any of that, have we.

i think us humans give ourselves too much credit sometimes.
the laws of nature leave us standing at the best of times, earthquakes, cyclones, tornados and volcanic eruptions leave us out of our depth.
even heavy snowfall reduces us to mental wrecks.
environmentally we should do more of course, even if it is just to help other species survive.

If you add together the weight of all humans on Earth they amount to approximately 0.00000003% of the Earth's mass.
