'Thousands sign petition to save church's night-time chimes
A petition to save the night-time chimes of a church bell, which has been silenced for the first time since 1779 following a single complaint from a local resident, has gathered 4,000 signatures.
St Peter's Church in Sandwich chimes every 15 minutes but Dover District Council served a night-time noise abatement order.
Carole George, who is leading the Save the Chimes campaign, said there was clearly "widespread concern about the ability of one person to go against the wishes of the majority".
The bells are currently silenced between 23:00 and 07:00 GMT.'
