Is anyone off to see any of the Christmas new releases over the holiday?
There is one film I really must see. I am an avid reader of the Lee Child books about the hulking big tough ex military cop, Jack Reacher. When I heard that a film franchise was being planned around the books I though great, nothing could be better for such a franchise than these books.
The I read that Tom Cruise was given the role of Jack Reacher.
Never in the field of movie making can there have been such a badly cast character. There is absolutely no way Cruise can carry off the role of Reacher. It just will not work.
I am still going to see the film but my expectations are very low indeed and having read a review of the film I am probably right. They seem to have really screwed up the script as well as the main character. I also do not know why they chose one of the later books to film rather than another earlier book where the character was developed, good as One Shot is, it is far from the best of them.
Any other Lee Child readers out there, what do you think of the casting?.....

Surely Tom Cruise was custom built for the ipad and e-reader? Your right Barry, more small-screen than panavision.
I recall being sorely miffed that I was never cast as Conan.

dire casting, i like lee childs books but not keen on the same character cropping up as we then know he is not going to meet his end.
apparently tarantino has a film just out, his first western and getting rave reviews. slavery in the deep south is the theme and is said to be unsettling for liberals with pre-conceived views.

Yes Barry, I listen to Lee Child 's audio books. I've also picked up on your Vince Flynn recommendation with Mitch Rapp character.
Five foot nothing Tom Cruise playing six foot plus Jack Reacher is ridiculous even in his high heels.

Well, I am just back from a Christmas and New Year break in sunny Barham

and logging in for the first time since before Xmas and what a lot of activity on the forum - no time to catch up, on all those threads so wont start but I do want to come back to this thread.
I went to see Reacher and I did enjoy the film and it had all the key plot elements of the book which makes a change from some film scripts....
But - Tom Cruise is NOT Reacher. He just does not have the height or sheer menace of Reacher. But it did not spoil the film for me and I recommend it. I hope it goes on to be a multi-film franchise but with someone else playing the Reacher role - please...

I went, with youngest daughter, for our treat over Christmas, to see "The Hobbit".
Hmmmm - well, it's had mixed reviews. For us, we felt some of it was beautifully done, but thee werre some changes I was sorry about, and there was quite a bit that was far too PeterJ/CGI. That's a shame, as for me it really began to interfere with the belief in the reality within the film.
Never mind - we rarely, if ever, go to the cinema these days, so it made an outing and a change.

Maggie, I've never seen anything based on JRRT's writings which does justice to the original text, so I'm not surprised by your review.

Wouldn't recommend Skyfall. More holes in the plot than the average woman's stockings. Not a predictable film by any means - I was fully hoping that it would live up to the hype but all we ended up with was a product placement chase movie with ideas pinched from Macgyver. But given the hype built up around the film it's not surprising to see the critics do their best to talk up this turkey. They know which side their bread s buttered.

I too was unimpressed. Formulaic and plot-light...but has broken UK box office records. Bland...James Bland.

I'm sure that only yesterday I saw stories about the huge swathe of awards awaiting Skyfall, and was left scratching my head at the very idea.
