  Watching a programme on the box about Victorian Bakers prompted me to dig out this picture from a later era.
  This is the window display of my parent's shop in Peter Street. There are loads of other pictures of the same vintage which allegedly are in my brother's loft. One day I will be brave enough to venture up there.

  One has to admit that Vane's admirable display of apple turnovers and banburies falls short against the above.

  I did tell this tale many years ago when Dover Forum was in it's infancy but it's worth repeating.
  
  The bakehouse cat used to while away it's idle hours by sleeping on top of the prover. However, one day while dozily stretching it fell off. Unfortunately it fell into the doughnut fryer. People were finding black hairs in the doughnuts for days afterwards.
