Chinese toddler left to die by the roadside

  It is hard to imagine this happening in this country but it is not, I believe, impossible.
  
  Perhaps such Bad Samaritans are rare, but I have personally encountered a real, black-hearted lack of concern for other's life and well-being, with ruinous results.
  
  The sad truth is that some individuals actually find it empowering to be 'hard' and cold-hearted and are even proud of it.
  
  Funny thing is, they are not slow to ask for help from others and even throw that help back in their faces. Some of this behaviour takes place much closer to home than some might think, and in y experience these types expend great energy presenting a front of "loveliness" and niceness while in effect leading double lives, or at least operating beneath a mask that hides their true selves.
  
  Rightly, China has been given to soul-searching over this issue. This country needs to take a look at its own levels if cynicism too, in my opinion.

  As I understand this particular case. The driver has turned himself in and offered an explanation of sorts for his behaviour. He was on the phone when he ran the young girl down, he thought it would certainly cost less to kill the girl and pay reparation to her family than to injure her and be stuck with the hospital bill.
  
  Indeed, it is high time that China turned back from it's 'Thatcherite' goal.

  Definitely, Tom. Also time that some people in the UK developed a conscience and amoral compass instead of treating a lack of those qualities as something to brag about.

  I have just dug out from memory something that was said of Dr. Samuel Johnson by his aunt (Nath. Ford) in the early 18th century, he being a sickly infant. "(she)...would not have picked such a poor creature up in the street."

  i saw this item on the news and a chinese bloke interveiwed blamed it on the greed culture prevalent in china.
  
  he stated that most people had no religious beliefs anymore and that money was their god.

  I could not but wonder if a boy toddler would have been ignored by all those that walked past that poor little girl.
  
  The first driver might have been an excuse has the second driver an equally poor excuse.

  Interesting quote re: Dr Johnson, Tom. A few points: the woman was talking hypothetically - I am sure not everyone in the 18th century would have left a child to die in the gutter just because it looked a bit sickly. Whether the person in question would have done the same in practice is a matter of conjecture - perhaps it was a figure of speech, said in a moment of exasperation. I wouldn't take such quotes too seriously.
  
  That is also of a different magnitude from many people ignoring an injured toddler's screams for help.
  
  And if Dr Johnson had been left to die as a defenceless toddler what a loss to teh English language that would have been.
  
  It seems the Chinese have chosen the way of "I'm alright Jack, pull up the rope." Some British people aren't much better.
