Figures released today show that for the first time The Tunnel is carrying more passengers than the Ferries, Ferries losing their edge?

that surprises me with the problems eurostar have every now and again, the ferries are a more reliable option albeit slower.

That surprises me as the latest figures (2012) from the Port of Dover, put the percentages at:
49.8% Cars
58.8% Coaches
57.1% Road Haulage vehicles

The report I half heard on local TV this morning had Eurotunnel saying they thought their increase had come from air passengers rather than ferry passengers.

Howard, The percentages given are market share between Tunnel and the Port of Dover. Passengers come in cars and Eurotunnel now has more than half of them.

Eurotunnel has long surpassed the ferries in the number of passengers transported. There were nearly twenty million last year, half of which travelled on Eurostar trains.

So going your way Mr Wiggins we would see the port go bust.

Nope Vic. Just because passenger vehicle market share is at less than 50% does not mean that at all.
Ed, perfectly correct that passenger numbers through Eurotunnel have been more than 50% of the market for some time. I think that the most recent news story on this front is due to the fact that for the first time Eurotunnel handled more than 50% of passenger car traffic.

i am quite surprised that eurotunnel get such a high proportion of the freight business, on the ferries the drivers can relax, have a decent meal, shower and relax before the long journey ahead.

Eurotunnel is 'on the way' provides them with fairly decent facilities whilst they wait for their shuttle and has had the marketing teams out visiting with the cargo owners and freight companies on both sides of the Channel. It is a little more complex than that, but that is close to the heart of the reason.

Eurostar have picked the majority of passenger traffic due to the fact that it takes you into the heart of France, (Gai) Paris, Simples

Some of my criticisms of DHB have been their poor corporate level relationships with the Ferry Operators, distinct lack of direct marketing of the port to the freight community as a whole (which would benefit all the Ferry Operators), deteriorating facilities for drivers on dock and lack of provision of an off dock buffer zone with driver facilities in case of terminal traffic congestion.

a piece on meridian earlier where they were talking to people who were planning to use the ferries today, the general consensus was that they found it more relaxing overall.
mr laming was typically bullish putting last years figures down to more people using eurostar to get to london for the olympics.

We like going by ship better but if the weather is not good and my wife gets very sea sick it would be the tunnel.
