It is tempting to cut myself off from town life and just stay here in our village.
So much wickedness it seems, lies there.
I pass a shop, where last week a young man shopped and when he came out was beaten so hard that his brain is damaged.
A 14 year old girl, blind in one eye now, after a 12 year old attacked her.
A man sent to prison for beating up three women in the park and threatening them with a knife.
Abusive drunks roll around the town's benches.
Yesterday,I walked past dogs on leads. Fighting dogs with their raw injuries displayed as some sort of medal of bravery for the owners.
I worry about my grandchlldren when they are older. Although they live out of town it will still be the place that they would go to
What have we created on this Earth.
Tears are in my eyes as I write this.
I wish,I hope.

Bit of an over reaction I think Penny.
Yes there have been some awful events recently but these are the exception what about all the weeks when nothing awful only good things happen. Sadly good news hardly ever gets reported.
The girl with the injured eye I am sure was an unintentional injuring, after all that is what kids do throw dirt although I do not condone it.

Amazingly you look back at newspapers from 100 years ago and nothing was really different, in fact it was probably worse, it is just that you hear about things a lot more now. I am sure that 100 years ago half of the news from Dover wouldn't have got to Deal.....
Been nice knowing you :)

"Whether you try to answer back or creep away in silence, it's all the same: you're beaten up anyway, and then your furious 'victim' takes you to court."
Juvenal describing the streets of classical Rome.
Only the other day I was in town with my four year old daughter. We stopped into the museum and I had a pleasant chat and a joke with the helpful girls there while Thalia went to the toilet. Across Market Square, with two or three friendly greetings, to stop outside BigFillas where Thalia had a quick game of peek-a-boo with the owner, coming away with a big smile saying, "he's a nice man, I love him".
Saw Howard's smiling face and a quick natter as we made our way to Smiths where the staff were again friendly, helpful and chatty. The sun was shining, it was fairly warm and Howard got a photograph of the Eight Bells with nobody sitting outside. All in all a pleasant outing and not at all unusual in this wonderful town of ours.

I did see the posting on facebook and have reposted, but first removed the exhortation to "beat up the bullies". Encouraging further violence does nobody any favours and demeans those making the request.
Running Keith is one of nicest people I have met and does think the best of everyone he meets. I hope this senseless act will not damage him permanently. The people that carried out the stupid attack are probably scared of difference and too unintelligent to express their own self doubt in any other way than through violence. We must be grateful that the majority of Dovorians are better than that.

I have started a new thread, before I saw this, sorry. It was in the hope that someone would give up the b'stards who did it. Chris makes a good point on Facebook about not tolerating this kind of thing. You are right - we have a few problems but overall it's a decent place to be. Which is even more reason to lean on this now.

chris sums up the town well in post 7 -very difficult to walk for long without meeting a friendly face and having a chat.
doesn't take away from penny's concerns about the nasty side, now added to about running keith.
at the end of the day it is about our own experiences.

Could someone point me to Facebook link, please?
Many years ago I did an evening course with Keith. I like him very much and am saddened beyond words at this appalling crime. Because crime it is and the sooner those who stooped so low are bought to justice the better.
