Perhaps I should explain my reasons for abandoning commenting on this forum. However this will be my final post.
Healthy debate is something I have always enjoyed as well as the opportunity to share opinions and learn from the experience and lives of others. However I’ve come to realise that on this forum the views of some cannot be challenged and some are unwilling to accept that times change, what is acceptable in society changes and we all have to adapt.
The excuse of age, etc is unacceptable- if someone is unable to post a reasoned argument or response, then don’t post in haste, walk away, write and reread, think about how the response maybe viewed before pressing the “submit” button.
In my professional life I’ve dealt with many different individuals and have sometimes regretted my actions, I hope I’ve learned from those mistakes.
Debate is challenging and the biggest challenge of all is being able to concede that perhaps we're out of step or wrong and need to back down, even occasionally to apologise.
I apologise if my views have caused offence at anytime, that was never intentional.
I wish forum members well going forward.

No offence on my part, Arthur. I wish you well and have enjoyed your contributions.
The fact that this forum is dominated by people with an unassailable belief in their own rectitude is rather well known in the greater Dover on-line community.

That is a shame Arthur, you will be missed and you were definitely not one of those who caused offence unlike some who seem to delight "in their own rectitude" by accepting no other view than their own.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I, for one, have found your posts considered, knowledgeable and economically expressed.
Times change, indeed, but not always for the good, so it's often necessary to defend what's being lost against whatever grotesquerie might replace it. As for offence, to coin a phrase, it's more often taken than given, and in any case there's a widespread tendency to regard a given idea as a body part rather than as an abstract thing that might be defended or modified or abandoned, and thus to feel personally threatened when it's given a scratch or a poke.
(Of course, none of the above is up for discussion, and I should be very offended should anyone disagree.)
Anyway, if you don't find your way back, all the best. If you do, bring some popcorn.
