Sometimes these honours are turned down based on principle. Sometimes they are just turned down for the sake of publicity, which is rather sad, albeit the very nature of celebrity.
I do find it odd that anybody would not wish to have their achievements and merits recognised. After all that's what meritocracy is all about...isn't it?

The trouble with the honours system is too many go to those who have friends in the right place rather than those who actually deserve them. How many political, sports and acting/film people etc really deserve the very top honours that get dished out, for me none of those in Howard's link deserve honours.
