Hi everyone, I've just signed up to the Forum. I came across this forum in a weird and wonderful way. Earlier today, I was talking to my husband about the fact that when I was a child, my family called Woodlice 'Monkey Peas'.
I googled this strange term, and one of the top enries on Google was a discussion on this forum!
Now, my maternal grandmother's maiden name was Cavell, and she came from Deal - so I'm guessing that's how 'Monkey Peas' came into our family vocabulary!
Are there any forum members with connections to the Cavell family in Deal? My research into the family is quite patchy, & difficult, as my Grandmother and her 2 sisters were orphaned at an early age.
I'd be delighted to hear from anyone with any info. Thank you.

Hello Vange, yes it's that time of year again and the pesky blighters on are the march once more!
Cavell is of course a well known name in Deal being being the name of a firm with a large undertaking (sorry, I have a warped sense of humour). I don't know them but I'm sure that some of our Deal members will.
Welcome, but I warn you we are a weird lot, with the exception of Howard and myself of course.

Well known Deal name. Albert Cavell was first DDC Chairman , Deal Alderman, Mayor Etc.
Norman Cavell was a Deal cllr, well known photographer.
The only Cavell I know around these days is Nick Cavell, lives or lived in York Rd. Walmer. Think he was a Walmer Parish cllr at one time, still maybe.

Kath Hollingsbee - my grandmother's name was Dorothy Mary; one sister was Alice; I don't have the other sister's name to hand at present.
Paul Watkins - many thanks for the info.

When I was DJing at Images in the mid 80's, a bloke called Cavill (local guy) came in one night to promote his new single- it was called 'You Don't know Me' .He arrived in a stretch limo. The song was quite an earful- a dirge even. Interestingly the 'B' side was a track called 'DOVER'.
My god it was so bad it was good. The lyrics went 'Dooova OOOOh Dooova - AhhhLL bee There!' . Fortunately that's all I can remember. I've still got it somewhere hmm perhaps I won't bother digging it out.
Never give up...

There was a fishmongers on the Strand which was run by Clive Cavell who also played professional football for Deal Town for many years. There was also a John Cavell from the Mill Hill area who played in a group/dance band Rhythmic Sound, I believe he also ran a pub for a while.

Martin you are correct about Clive, I think he died recently. I think there was another brother who ran the business with Clive. Is there not a John Cavell, former builder , who lives/lived on Dover Rd. [Drum Hill area]?

Yes I saw Clive had died, I was surprised there was nothing on the Sports pages of the Mercury when he died but I suppose his playing days were so long ago now, there was a brother who ran the business with him but I did not know his name. I do not know of the builder John Cavell, I do not think he is the musician that I referred to.
