some rather attractive floral displays to be seen there i believe that businesses and residents get together to cover the cost.

Yes Howard how things are when you get Community involvement.
The "Star" is Adeline Reidy (Number One Guest House) who organises it all on behalf of the Castle Street and Area Association.
I know Adeline looks in so she will correct me if I am wrong how it started.
Flower baskets started up when DDC would not plant up because traffic problems for maintaining (watering etc). Dover Town Council provide a small financial contribution but the majority of cost is from the Association Members (Businesses in Castle Street and local area residents).
Last year we had a small group doing the daily watering on a rota system but this year Adeline has "twisted the arm" ( those who know Adeline that she is good at doing this) for the person who plants up the baskets to maintain them.
As I mentioned on an earlier thread DTC at short notice did plant up some baskets (after budgets set) following DDC not planting any hanging baskets this year. The Town Clerk secured some planting within a small budget. The problem was always going to be the watering and the town baskets have been done by DTC staff...a few hiccups that I am sure the Town Clerk will have resolved for next year when personally I hope my fellow DTC Councillors ensure the budget is there to do a proper job especially as the town MUST be spick and span for the world to see in the Olympics year and become the standard for the future.
I believe the past Mayor (Sue Jones) did attempt to secure spnsorship from Dover Town Businesses but this fell on stoney ground.
SO THANK YOU ADELINE WITHOUT YOUR DEDICATION CASTLE STREET WOULD NOT BE THE PICTURE IT IS TODAY

thanks for info pat, good to hear that adeline puts the necessary pressure on, the flowers make all the difference.
about 7 years ago the mayor(george allt) actively encouraged a "dover in bloom" that suddenly gound to a halt after his year in office.
i agree that the town council would be best placed to organise the floral arrangements, surely not much to ask for the towns traders to chip in, we hardly talking about large sums?
