Castle St - the gateway to Dover...
- 12 March 2009 22:1117202We are making plans for the dressing up of the street and will be making sure that St Georges flags are renewed for 23rd april.
The small plot at the foot of castle hill has been mown today and the next step is to prune and tidy, then in may/june we will be planting some flowers and putting up the street baskets.
If anyone wants to donate help it would be appreciated. One Sat morning putting up flags for example.
However the biggest difficulty is watering the plants weekly in the summer. is there anyone out there who could donate a couple of hours regularly ? We could finance some decent expenses.
DTC and some businesses have already offered financial help so we are ready to go on this.

But yes the efforts are well worth it and decorate the street very cheerfully.

Paul - I regret that my sprinkler is now inadequate for the task and I am calling in professional help. my legs aren't up to pulling either (let alone climbing ladders!)
However we will have the best display ever and blooms will bloom.
And dont forget 4th July party . This year is 25 years in business so we will try for something special

Despite the neglected disgraceful bits ('Damages' passim, nota bene, grandees...), it's still a beautiful street that deserves a bit of love and attention, the poor proud old thing.
Viva Castle Street! - 14 March 2009 07:2317340With mixed feelings , the blockhouse that was mfi is due to be demolished thiis year. To be replaced with a hoarding.
The Castle st society has done what it can around the edges and encourages the locals to do their bit. Mike McFarnell ,Adeline Reidy and myself are the active ones but businesses do chip in as well as doing their own thing.

In respect of the watering , it really is a difficult one. Over the past few years we have divided it to 4 businesses and supplied home made watering machines. Last year we bought a Ghostbuster back pack but it only feeds a couple of baskets before refilling so the operation took about 90 mins last year and still some died. It was exceptionally windy though. We are trying a different approach this year but watering is the key. - 14 March 2009 07:4517341DavidH

I thought the council watered the baskets on Castle St?Or has that stopped or indeed did they ever have responsibility over watering them?
We have a ghostbuster back pack you may borrow for summer if thats of any help. I'd like to volunteer but my hernia doesn't allow me too much activity.
Although once off the diet I don't mind joining in with the mouth watering down in Blakes Cellar Sar..lol
I always try to buy postcards or greetings cards of Castle St to send to relatives up't north as I think its one of the most charming streets in Dover.Keep up the good work.
