  I always use a small mat size piece outside and inside the door for the cats when they come in through the cat flap and throw it away when it gets too grubby.
  
  I just realised how strange that appears, to explain it seems to dry their paws off more than a conventional door mat so there is not the trail of muudy prints across the kitchen floor.
