  without sounding silly that just looks like a common caterpillar to me.

  Caterpillarus longus.
  Its green colour seggests its normal habitat is among green leaves and cabbages.
  Also known as scourge of the cabbage farmer.
  
  It will become a butterfly.

  I have been told it is:
  
  the caterpillar of the dot moth, Melanchra persicariae.
  Colour can be green or brown.
  
  feeds on lots of different garden plants and trees including silver birch, rowan, golden rod, columbine, all of which we have in the garden.
