The population of Britain is estimated to have been around 1 - 1.25 million leading up to the A, S & J migration (down from around 4 - 5 million during the Roman occupation). The subsequent Viking invasions are estimated to have been between 4 - 8 % of the population, and to have been on a smaller scale. So even if the estimate is 5% of the population, this is statistically significant, and equal to about 3 million on today's population level. Hardly a 'minimal difference'. But its demographic significance was huge: it forced us true Britons to pack up our woad and look for jobs in the cold bits of the North and West.
