Let's hear it for the humble spud
the carrot and the pea
plucked screaming from their mother mud
quick-froze and sent to sea
Three cheers for the red kidney bean
hip-hip for chicory
by human hand untouched, by human eye unseen
quick-froze and sent to sea
Hooray too for the freshest veg
grown for dinner and for tea
freed from the prison of the hedge
boiled or roasted, and plated-up for me
