At yesterdays Port Consultation I was surprised to learn the plans that Calais has for redeveloping the Port.
I would recommend looking at their website on the subject.
www.debatpublic-calais-port2015.org/informer/dossier-maitre-ouvrage.html
The new Calais Harbour is planned to be 50% bigger than Dover Harbour and with room for freight and cruise.......
of course if Dover is to expand then our partners have to do likewise - opens a can of worms tho! Their Public meeting is tomorrow .

If I remember right David the area surrounding Calais is huge and flat and has plenty of room for development, as far as the eye can see.
Dover harbour is at the end of a valley and must expand left or right, and once again access and exits come into mind.
They never have got it right yet.

Yep . if you look at the pdf picture on the link the cover says it all. they are planning to build out from the shore an arm just like dover harbour but bigger. And of course Dover harbour is also used for leisure purposes which wont be the case in Calais. Its quite impressive. I am not suggesting that we should compete on size anyway but our development must go ahead despite the regrettable loss of leisure space in the harbour. I regret that but you cant have both.

I didn't look at the link David, I didn't need to, but I know what you are saying.
Although the leisure facilities have to suffer on the actual sea front, in the end. Should the people in charge be thinking of giving the people of dover and visitors a bigger and better facility very close by beyond the harbour walls, even if it means expanding seaward.
There is more to our seafront than just buisiness, If they take that away then what have the public got?

This was a very important news item from the PCC and will affect Dover very much.
I would be concerned about the cruise business, but hopefully many U.K. and USA and other English speaking cruise passengers will still prefer Dover to Calais.
It was also announced that SeaFrance would stop taking any foot passengers other than large groups.
We must work very hard and make some very brave decisions over the next few years, if only to stand still.
Big, strategic decisions need to be taken by the big important people, but there is much work on the ground that needs to be done and leaving it to some of the bodies like Dover Pride, is just not on.

Both DDC & DHB will be giving evidence to the Commission during the next two weeks. Tonight's meeting is the first of three . Of course the development of Calais has significant effects on Dover as does Boulogne and Dunkirk. Dover is the natural UK Port of entry. We received a deputation from the Commisioners in June & have had regular meetings with the CAC [Calais's equivalent of the District Council] to discuss both Dover and Calais's development, the implications to transport infrastructure, air quality issues & associated matters that may lead to EU funding activity.
