At the end of the day its aboutr common sense
if someone knocks your door and your not expectng a call either
1; don't answer door
2; if you do answer door keep them if there unknown on the doorstep
if you dont wish to continue the conversation just say goodbye and close the door

times iv had to deal with elderly people who have been ripped off on the doorstep
some running into thousands of pounds
so sad, but these geezers had to be let into the flats
the geezer robbed let them in sadly

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.
