Hitler ran one of then most horrific and disgusting regimes in history, rivalled only by Stalin who is now known to have murdered even more people than Hitler. I suspect that some idiots would be out wearing Soviet uniforms on stag parties in the same way some do the Nazi uniform if the uniform was 'sexier' so to speak.
Just because some fool wears such a uniform in a leisure activity of some kind it is wrong to assume they are 'celebrating' or approving of the regime the uniform is associated with. I really do think certain conclusions are being jumped to here that are simply wrong and a drunken idiotic lark is all that happened.
I have certainly not been defending them (Reg) but trying only to put it into perspective.
It is correct that certain things are banned in some countries, the swastika for instance in Germany, for understandable reasons. But overall it is not illegal to wear a Nazi uniform even though it may show poor judgement and bad taste on the part of the wearer. You cannot legislate for bad taste.
Incidentally - when I build models of Luftwaffe aircraft, like the Bf109 I made recently, I add a swastika to the tail because that is what the real aircraft actually had. To do so I have to buy aftermarket decals because some manufacturers do not provide them (some German companies like Revell and Airfix who export to Germany in particular). 'Dressing' a model in an authentic way like that is no different to someone re-enacting a Nazi in an authentic uniform, but that would not mean I would want a load of Nazi re-enactors at Pencester for the weekend. Sarah, yes I know what you mean, I have felt uncomfortable among them at War and Peace and no doubt there are some very dubious individuals among them, as picked up by the tv programme you referred to. But - that is not the case for the majority who are interested in the history, some of whom also belong the US or British groups. They do act the part when in uniform though and that adds to the creepiness when around them and that more than anything is why I do not want such German groups at Pencester.
