16:4173531Have just returned from a road journey to Bulgaria via Romania and experienced something I have often heard would contravene EU law if applied in Dover ie 'A Town tax'. I was approaching the ferry to cross the river to Bulgaria from Romania and a lady lowered a barrier acrtoss the road 25 metres from the port entrance and demanded 5 euros for town tax, something we in Dover have always wanted and have had refused.
On entering the port I had to pay 11 euros port adninistration tax, the port comprised a hut for customs/police and a hut to buy my ticket for the ferry( a raft with an engine) 49 euros for a 15 minute crossing. The ferry could only carry about 6 trucks and ran some 8 times a day, so 48 trucks a day and yet a bridge costing many millions was being built I imagine by way of EU funding as is the road repair and upgrade of Romania's roads.
Writing of upgrades to Romainia's roads, I used a beautiful bypass around the town of Timisoara and marvelled at the wonderful soaring bridge I was due to cross ahead of me and imagined it would be crossing one of the many wide rivers of the Balkans, but no it was on closer inspection built to traverse a disused single railway line. So incensed am I at what appears a total waste of our money that I shall write to our Kent MEPs to confirm my findings.
Surely if you join a club, for that is what the EU is often called, then you should surely have attained the standards of that club prior to applying for membership not using existing members subscriptions to attain that standard. I am by the way totally supportive of the ideals of the EU as I directly benefit from them.

18:2573551romania will always be a law unto themselves, there are villages still without mains water and electricity, corruption is endemic., while the rich live in the lap of luxury and not subject to the same laws as the poor in practice.
the will bleed the e.u until their bluff is called.

20:5373571Corruption is endemic and the way of life in Romania. I omitted on purpose the request from the girl who was collecting 'town tax'. After asking for the 5 euros she said'' have you got chocolate for me and I give you kiss''. As the chances of her turning back into a princess from her amphibian counternance appeared to be remote I gave her the 5 euros, some Oriols and scarpered.

07:4073587Either way was brave, Ken. Her big, male and extremely closely related cousin may have been behind that hedge waiting to protect her sensibilities.............
I need to apologise in advance on almost every level for that.

13:3773661Ken, to give a reply of sorts to your post1, I am waiting for a referendum for Britain to leave the e.u., so as to express my democratic NO to the e.u.
Everyone knows that Democracy is not consulted on this matter. It is very concerning, and I believe in freedom and Democracy.
