Paul
I should add that he has done away with the fuel escalator and a further increase of 5p per litre which was due later this year has also been scrapped.

Quite right Marek.
You did not mention the higher than expected increase to personal income tax allowances to £8,105
As usual I will do a run down of the main budget measure when I have had a chance to see what was not in the speech and have absorbed the implications. Lots of emails updating me are dropping into my in-box as we speak so I will have a lot of reading to do over the next 24 hours for professional reasons. Wont have much time tonight though as there is a rather important local matter going on that needs some help... Might see some of you in Blakes tonight....

A Telegraph reader, from Surrey, has written to the paper today about the 1p off petrol.
Early morning he paid, 134.9p per litre. Early afternoon he heard of the reduction and passed the same petrol station, the price by then was, 135.9p/litre. At 6pm the price was again, 134.9p
I have also read this morning (I am not a driver myself) of the difficulty of knowing where this 1p reduction is in effect as there is ever a variation of pricing in each neighbourhood.
As usual fine words and butter-less parsnips are the order of the day.

i don't think it was a clever move anyway, one pence a litre is hadly going to impact on most peoples finances.
much better to give a rebate to our hard pressed hauliers so that they can compete on a level playing field with their european counterparts.

There was going to be a 4p increase under the escalator, so the 1p off plus getting rid of the escalator means that petrol should be 5p a litre less than it might otherwise be. No doubt though that some garages have not been passing the reduction on. If you are aware of a particular establishment that has not done so then stop using it.

petrol stations work on very small margins if they can get away for a few weeks without passing the saving on, then some will do so.

We have little choice in Dover Barry, all the town stations are now Hammonds' BP outlets. I usually use Total at Duke of Yorks, usually a couple of p cheaper but it's not worth using time and extra petrol to go further afield to find it cheaper. Time was when the saving on a tank of diesel in France paid for the day trip- but alas! no more.

it is surprising how many people will drive £.5 worth of petrol in distance to save £.3 on filling up.
done it myself in the past.

Changing the subject slightly can someone please explain why in the UK diesel is dearer than petrol, whereas in europe diesel is the cheaper fuel.
