Yes this was the day the music died.. Buddy Holly's demise is often referred to in this way, most notably in the song penned by Don McLean...American Pie.
He was an early music legend but became even more of a legend after his death in a plane crash on Feb 3 1959. His songs still resonate in your ear drums to this day and they are often revived by modern stars.
In those early days of 1959, the way things were done was this...if you had some good early success, your agent booked you on a whistle stop tour across the USA....25 towns in 25 nights kind of thing. Probably the idea was to secure as much revenue as possible before the novelty of your act wore off. Yes indeed they booked in as many dates as possible in the shortest time, and it made lots of money. Buddy was on one such tour by greyhound-style bus. That was the way it was done in those days.
But fatally his tour bus broke down in a very snowy Clear Lake, Iowa. In a sterling effort to get to the next date on the tour he hired a small plane. Along with him on the small plane were fellow supporting performers on the travelling bill...Richie Valens ( Donna) and the Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace). Sadly the plane didnt get very far, little further than the end of the runway in fact, where in the aforementioned snowstorm it veered out of control killing all onboard. And that was that...the end of Buddy Holly's physical being but not the end of his music which has been a considerable legacy for us all to enjoy.
That'll be the day......
