Some services PaulB are valuable, like teachers and nurses. Others are superflous like most spin doctors and all so called diversity co-ordinators.

The point is it is very easy indeed, when the money is available and no restraint being imposed, for Civil Servants and Local Government officers to expand their empires. It gives them more kudos, bigger departments and budgets, more power and higher salaries.

We are sufferring a huge fiscal problem and public spending must, absolutely must, be cut in real terms. Not to do so will create much greater problems in the long term and will cost jobs. These new lost jobs will be in the private wealth creating sector as these are what pays these puffed up salaries.

Far far better to lose jobs and costs in the non-productive and less useful parts of the public sector than lose them in what might be profitable companies in normal times. The bigger the burden you place on the private sector the more diffficult it becomes to get out of recession.
