    Howard - You have strange memories of Livingstone's time at the GLC. The man was an extreme left winger who expressed support and sympathy for the IRA and other crackpot left wing causes. He and Derek Hatton were two of the worse types of local councillor imaginable. In that role he was not directly elected when on the GLC of course and it is impossible for you to claim that he was 'always in tune with an electorate'. He got the mayoral role when there was an anti-Conservative up-swell and not through any dubious personal merit.
