CONTROLLED EXPLOSION OF ORDNANCE
The dredger 'David Church' whilst operating within Dover harbour picked up what is believed to be an old World War II explosive.
Dover Coastguard has been coordinating with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth and with the Dover Port Authority, to have the explosive taken to a remote area and detonated.
Tony Chester, Watch Manager, Dover Coastguard, says:
"It is the intention of the EOD to detonate the ordnance in a controlled environment in daylight hours. The ordnance is 1metre in length with a 30cm diameter and its fins have rusted off.
The coastguard will be issuing safety broadcasts and warnings to vessels in the area. "

It wasn't wearing gold-laden trousers, was it?

The David Church has been dredging in the corner of the Eastern Docks by the cargo berth for the last few days so imagine that is where they picked up the bomb. Seen here with cargoship Eastern Bay on the Dover Cargo Terminal and the finishing touches being put to the Pier A extension.

It was probably one of our own, given the number of warships broken up in the area in the 1920s !!

8, no paul the dimensions were given as one metre by 30cm so it must have been one of theirs. If it had been ours, it would have been a yard long and 12 inches in diameter. QED.

If it had fins that had rusted away that would indicate that it was an air-dropped one of theirs. Probably dropped by a Do.17 or Ju.88 in 1940.

More likely a Heinkel He 111, which was much heavier.

Hmmm, not convinced. Well, the He.111 was indeed a heavier bomber, but I have a lot of the 1940 Dover daily reports from the National Archives and most reports indicate Stuka, Ju.88 or Do.17 attacks - basically dive bombers which the He.111 was not, and not a role it was suitable for. I don't recall many (if at all) Heinkel attacks on shipping. But there a lot of reports to plough through to be certain so I could be wrong. Some other time I'll check.

If you dive-bombed in a He.111 the wings would have come off.

If it's from that era and the fins have rusted away it must be Japanese
