Last Friday morning there was a black bag of waste dumped in Bench St outside the front of Atina House. It had been torn open by gulls and the pavement was strewn with all sorts of rubbish including what looked like some personal correspondence. Ah, I thought, some evidence to pinpoint the guilty party. So I phoned DDC, explained the precise location, (on the pavement, opposite Bench St car park, outside the front of Atina House, and requested quick action so that the fly tippers could be prosecuted). A few hours later the mess had been cleared so I assumed that action had been taken.
Yesterday I had a call from a lady at DDC explaining that one of their operatives had followed up my call on Monday, (!) found no rubbish in the Atina House car park (!) and kindly informed me that even if there had been rubbish there they had no power to remove it as it would have been on private land. The bag which I had reported had obviously just been cleared by the street cleaner on his rounds.
Further enquiry revealed that my original call had not been answered at DDC but at a call centre in Thanet. Then a written work order had been raised which was collected by the operative the following Monday. Apparently this is the procedure DDC use when hot on the heels of fly tippers.

I always report by E mail so I have always assumed that it went straight to Whitfield. We have been getting over run in my ward with dumped rubbish usually in black bags that split very quickly. They are normally removed very quickly but unless someone goes through them looking for evidence and takes action the problem will continue.

I think the perpetrators must read this forum because today there are two bags dumped in the same place.

It is bit of a vicious circle, rubbish gets dumped by some moron, it gets cleared with no repercussions so the moron dumps more in the same place knowing it will get removed for free.
Seems DDC have little interest in catching and fining the larger rubbish dumpers that really annoys us tax payers, they prefer to catch ignorant smokers who drop those little cigarette ends that hardly show.

Now most of you who know me will understand that while I am at the front of the queue to slam official incompetence, I am always happy to give credit where credit is due. This time, with a little push from our Nigel, a very nice man from the council turned up, went into the bags with his rubber gloves and hit gold. Business waste from a fairly well-known local firm, including agency staff pay slips, time sheets, staff bank and address details, the full Monty.

Great stuff but why would a business not shred documents like that? Is it possible that they put the bag out for business rubbish collection and it got blown away?

Photos courtesy of Peter, the second one is almost a copy of the one dumped in Longfield Rd junction with Belgrave Rd every Friday morning recently.

Can't Mention Specifics Howard but I must admit I was totally shocked when I saw the contents of the bags. If I was an identity thief I would have had a field day.

Well done Peter

, I can't help but wonder if the bags would have been searched without Nigel's intervention.

Any update on Post 7 Peter? Written warning to the guilty party?

Visits by council enforcement officers and a severe ticking-off.

For a moment there I thought they had been let off, thankfully the naughty book was thrown at them and they won 't transgress again. Councillor Kenton promised zero tolerance and has now put it into practice.

The DDC policy on littering is nonsensical, the smallest cigarette butt gets a massive fine while a more visible sackful of litter gets a ticking off. I know which is the worst offender in my mind and I would think there are many who would agree with me
