It starts with simple things. I would never dare swear in front of my parents, even now, but if you go to a school these days the parents are worse than the children while standing around the playground. If I was caught getting up to something by the police when I was young I would have been marched home to my parents who would then thank the copper and punish me. These days the parents are more likely to berate the copper.

If the school put me in detention my parents would make sure I was there, and punished at home as well. These days detentions involve staying in during a break so as not to inconvenience the parents.

If I was sent to my room my parents meant it and I stayed there. These days the rooms have televisions, computer games, internet etc and the parents can't get the children out of them.

The one common thread here? Parents.

I love my children and want the best for them but they are not my "mates", they are not my "best friends", I do not want to go out with my son to meet girls or play in arcades. They are my children and I will do my best to teach them right from wrong. When I set a punishment they will stick to it, no matter how awkward it is for me. If I say they will not have new toys or comics for a set period as a punishment that is what will happen. And woe betide them if they ever think it is OK to swear in front of me, and I don't care what they can hear on television if I hear it on there while they are watching it gets turned off.
