Howard you day that the market square was a desolate wasteland before the giant telly was installed. It's still a giant wasteland only it's got a giant telly to make it worse.
If this is the only answer to town regeneration then God help us all.
It's hardly used for the purpose it was intended for -ie. throngs of happy smiling workers cheering and jumping for joy whilst watching the magnificent display of athletic prowess etc. etc. etc.
It is merely a disgusting attempt to regenerate on the cheap.
For the more discerning it is appalling. Visitors to the town must see this thing for the first time and think "Oh My God. Is this Dover? Is this the historic town we were led to believe it was in the brochures?"
Then they go somewhere with a bit more life and dynamics such as Canterbury.
I don't blame them. I always try to avoid venturing towards that area. It just depresses me. What with the tattyness, the half knocked down buildings, the drunks, derelict buildings.
I'm still wondering if they intend removing it after the olympics. - 8 August 2012 13:07186431Howard, it's good to see the photos above of people enjoying themselves in the Market Square, the fountain in full spray and the ever popular Olympics on the Big Screen, I for one am very pleased to see this hubbub of activity. A Big well done to the organisers for making use of the square during the Olympics with bean bags and flags etc.
I see on our front page today there are more activities scheduled for the closing ceremony this coming Sunday. Hope the weather holds out for everyone
Talking of our front page, there is a blinding photo with information of the Dover Seafront Community Day on Saturday which includes a mock rescue in the harbour by Dover Lifeboat and a chance to meet the ever popular Newfoundland Sea Rescue Dogs

the closing ceremony event should be a cracker with the fun starting many hours before the event and the weather forecast is for unbroken sun.
