Big moon and gardening
- 19 March 2011 18:1997618with the 20% bigger moon appearing tonight , and the first sunny day in dover for over a week thought i would do a spot of gardening
the old wives tale is to go by the moon
so does anyone use this saying ?
i mean will my onions get bigger this year and rhubarb longer , due to planting today ? - 19 March 2011 18:3297621Yes I have it on good authority Ron that yer onions will be enormous this year and your rhubarb will be as long as pinochio's nose. You will be able to tell tall tales to all at the next gathering of the garden club.
Are you organic Ron or are you inducing the above with the help of nitrogen..think the nitrogen might have more effect than the moon but I beleive in those old wives tales meself.

I might add that I have no gardening skills whatsoever myself and live in a block of flats with a concrete balcony !!

the best days were after the circus used to be at elmsvale , i am sure the days of the wheelbarrow race started after the elephants used to walk back to dover priory

As the moon pulls the tide it also causes moisture to rise in the earth which then encourages growth. Seeds apparently absorb more moisture during the time of the full moon. The best time to turn over garden soil is during the last quarter of the moon (decreasing moon phase) because that's when the water has dropped to its lowest point meaning there is less moisture in the soil.

20 March 2011 00:0897719Ron, an old shipmate of mine, Jack Robinson, lived on Elms Vale road and used to collect the elephant manure when the Circus was in town, you should have seen the size of his veg.
Many years ago I was a member of the Onion & Leek club which held monthly meetings in the Diamond hotel in Dover. I didn't know a lot about gardening in those days but picked up quite a few tips from the other members who were mostly old miners. They came from all over to attend meetings, Aylesham, Elvington, Eythorne and Deal. We had an exhibition at the end of the season and there were some "whoppers" on show. I didn't win anything myself but I grew some reasonable sizes. I have some trees that desperately need cutting down at the moment so perhaps I should have got on with it over the last 24 hrs

Ron/Alec Some gardeners say, If you grind up a cow horn, bury it when the moon is full, then dig it up in the Spring, dilute it with water and spray the liquid on your crops, it can protect your crops from disease.
