- 3 November 2014 06:14274022This is the real name of Acker Bilk who sad;y passed away yesterday aged 85 after suffering from a long ill ness.
He learned to play the clarinet in the army. His bigest hit was "Stranger on the Shore" 1992
His last concert was in 2013.
Not my sort of music,but was popular with many people. - 3 November 2014 07:40274023Very good playing the clarinet like myself we both learned to play it in the army as you have wrote already anyone starting out to play the Bflat clarinet learn to play Stranger on the Shore that number will go on for ever ,it is in all the learning books on playing the clarinet .I played both the Bflat and Eflat ones the Ef was a lot smaller then the Bf which most play, but at a higher pitch .

3 November 2014 07:57274024I suspect that the '1992' in Roger's post is a typo. As those of us of a certain age will testify 'Stranger on the Shore' was 1962, the theme tune to a BBC Television Children's Seria! Of the same name - that sadly has never been repeated - as far as I am aware. A great loss R.I.P.Ian Handley

Dover born (1946) & bred, Moved from area in 1999 - family still living in Dover - 3 November 2014 08:422740261962 was the year that they cut back on the army band I was in and I was moved to HQ as a med+clerk job, in 1964 I was told I was to go back in the band but a few days before I was to fly out to join a band ,I was taken into Hos/and after weeks in there it was the end of my army years.
