  When we were in Germany, on various postings, the local children started school at 8 am. Getting there late was not an option. The child allowance was seriously decreased if late arrival was reported more than twice in a term, unless there were acceptable reasons like illness, supported with a doctor's note. In Hong Kong it's loss of face if a child arrives late. In many countries the child gets detention, which usually comprises of doing extra homework. Our children, attending military schools were never late. It's the basis of respect and self discipline from parents and students to the school and teachers. Can't abide being late for anything myself.
