maybe our educated members knew this already.
i found out this morning when i went out the back and noticed a bee floating on its face in a bucket of rain water.
most distressing, looked like a pool party at michael barrymores house.

Reminds me of this, you could always try singing it to the next one you find -
This summer I went swimming,
This summer I might have drowned,
But I held my breath and I kicked my feet and I moved my arms around,
I moved my arms around
The Swimming Song, Loudon Wainwright III
I didnt think bees needed to swim , may be the rspca could teach them .

Bees need a drink of water from time to time. I fill a shallow dish with pebbles and add water. This allows insect to drink in safety...then I go out with a can of bug-spray and make a sport of it (not really)

I think it was Einstein who remarked that once the bees have gone the rest of the animal lifeforms will die out in a fortnight or so.
It is this sort of thing that brings families together Mark. If you need poison sucked out...Who ya gonna call?

actually tom this was discussed last summer at a time when bees were kicking the bucket in droves or was it hives.
not a scientific cove but don't we rely on them to go around pollinating?

I love bees. Last summer we had a bees nest at the bottom of the garden. They found a nice secluded spot between a load of old pallets that were due for the tip. Not sure if they're still there i'll have a little nosy later on. I think they were honey bees. A couple of bee keepers showed some interest in taking them off my hands but i wanted to keep them. Might even get a little bee box.
Mind you has anyone noticed how big the bees are this year. The ones i've seen are massive. They had a double white ring markings at the sting end. The wasps are huge too. I swear they were wearing boots and had tattoos.
