I started my working life as a cashier, and what a nightmare it was on occasion.

I loved it though as I could get some people to smile, but we were taught early on that smiling wasnt optional, and you also look at the customer, acknowledge them, scan their items, check they havent forgotten anything , ask for the loyalty card and take their pennies, ansd then say good bye!

I wish heartily that cashiers now adays did.. I hate being on the mobile phone but sometimes have no choice, but i always say hello, and sorry , and thank you at the end of the transactions.

My favourite trick is to say hello quite brightly when they are sullen and ignore me, and then always say thank you with a big grin. Half of them still dont take the hint!! One of my bug bears.. rude cashiers..

Dont even get me started on cashiers more interested in talking to their mates over the checkouts.... because i need to know who was out and wasted.... i always join in, normally stops that quite quickly.
