We should ban the import of these battery eggs.
What's the point of us obeying the rules and being more kind/humane to chickens, pigs and cows, if the rest of Europe ignore the rules and then we import their cheap, cruel, produce - decimating our own farming industry in the process ?
The battery restrictions are still too cruel to the chickens. I guess a lot of it is our own fault in our pursuit of ever-cheaper foods.
Roger
I usually listen to Farming Today on R4 - there is an abundance of unfairnesses towards British farmers because of EU regs. And battery farming goes against all ideas of decency - as Roger says, in the pursuit of cheap (crap) food. I have been rediscovering the joys of free range duck eggs lately - lovely, tasty, fresh and humane.

This is one where I can fully agree.....
Battery farming is abhorrent. The UK has done the right thing for the hens but as usual other EU countries flout the rules of the EU. As Howard says the EU is a pointless charade on so many levels.

We refuse to buy battery or barn eggs. Only free range, usually from Craig at the Cherry Tree shop. Cheaper than supermarkets too, and fresher, tastier and with about 10-15% double yolks.

Nothing better than free-range chickens. I miss mine.

What made me stop keeping them- a close friend always looked after them when we went away. I got down to one cockerel and two hens and my friend became ill and not able to look after them. I knew no one else dependable and decided to find homes for the three, which I did. Like all animals, you have to devote quite a lot of time to them, but I still miss them and the very fresh lovely eggs. It was lovely to hatch new chicks every year too.
Presumably if battery eggs cease in UK they will import same as they will be cheaper, so we have to make sure we buy only BRITISH produced eggs!
