There is so much rubbish in the river irt used to be cleaned out from time to time by volenters,it l;ooks a mess.

I remember there used to be a scrapyard that I believe backed onto the river on Cherry Tree Avenue. It could be that. There is some film on youtube of it's being cleared in 2011 which might help, but I've no idea when it ceased trading or when the buildings came down.

I know the part you are talking about Rodger. It is on the bend of the river. I have always wanted to know what was there.

The concrete there is the floor of the workshop and office of the old car breakers, you can still see the inspection pit now full of rubbish.I,ve spent much time there in the past fitting bits on old cars i often used to buy out of there,Cortinas,Avengers,Escorts etc,all everyday motors back then but all worth a small fortune now.

The whole section is in a shocking state, overgrown along the whole length on both sides ( up to a week ago anyway).

Stu B,post 5, it could be a dear scrapyard but once he got to know you he was alright,i know the part you mean now ,not sure what was there.I know there was a furniture factory on the other side and the dust extraction machine used to hang out over the river but i think that was further along.Maybe there was some sort of mill there? The scrapyard must have shut around 20-25years ago.

The Dour still gets cleaned at set times of the year by volunteers. It looks a mess because people use it as a bin. Settees, bikes, scooters, chairs, shopping trollies etc get thrown in. It have a number of friends who help out every time there is a Dour clean organised. Next one is 16th July. The volunteers meet up in Morrisons car park at 09.30 hrs. Get their waders and hi viz jackets plus litter pickers and off they go. There is always room for extra volunteers to actively help improve Dover and collect the rubbish, so generously dumped, by those who don't care for the town or the environment. So do join and do your bit or as you walk past, acknowledge the efforts of the volunteers at least. They could be sat at home, feet up waiting for another to clear up the mess, like the majority in Dover do. Look in Pencester Gardens where the drunks and wacky baccy smokers hang out and see what they do with their empty cans and bottles. The rubbish that ends up in the river because of lazy uncaring people and lack of bins chokes the life out of that chalk bed river. There have to be reeds etc in there to change the speed of water flow in places. It helps give a hiding place for baby fish and water fowl. If rubbish was not dumped in the Dour, it would not get caught in the plants. It's an asset to this town that should be appreciated by not being treated as a dump for any and all unwanted rubbish.
