14:3189985the above mentioned serving cabinet member has been saying this week that it is now acceptable to be prejudiced against muslims.
she maintains that the chattering classes at dinner parties are the worst offenders.
how does someone as divisive as this get to such a high position?
she has alienated many of her faith by supporting the war in afghanistan and upset many of us by supporting the wearing of the burka.

19:2590009Yes she is in fact the Chairman of the Conservative Party as I understand it and often speaks for them on TV on such shows as Question Time and so on. Very much a straight talker and not everyones cuppa tay. This story would have made more headlines but it was drowned out by the huge stories last week..Alan Johnson, Tony Blair and Andy Coulson in that order. As one newspaper said the other day...a day is a long time in politics! and it was one heck of a 24 hours from late afternoon thursday.
The Baroness highlighted her speech to the media beforehand wanting to draw attention to the plight of muslims...in other words drawing attention to the notion that it seems to have become the acepted norm to be prejudiced againts them.
She is I think Im remembering right the first muslim woman to high fly in British politics so she is using her high office to draw attention to the raw deal muslims seem to get.
But do they...as someone said the other day on TV, when a Muslim gets on the tubetrain next to you carrying a rucksack or a holdall, you and the other immediate people get nervous and move away. When the day dawns that people are not walking around London and everywhere else with such fears then it will be a step in the right direction..a first brick in the wall. That needs to be addressed first. Muslims have done themselves this social harm. Obviously we would all like a better world where everyone gets along so hopefully Muslims can integrate better and play a bigger role. I think everyone would welcome that. Some bridge building needed. All the bombers were born here, so what went wrong!

in your third paragraph about her you mention her drawing attention to muslim problems.
this is what troubles me, we keep hearing that christians think they are being marginalised, we do not hear politicians raising this issue. rightly so, they are elected to represent all their constituents regardless of the race, religion or colour.
having looked through her biography it seems that she is simply a headline seeker with a series of contradictory statements over the years.
her appointment to the cabinet smacks of tokenism.

08:1590052She did perform well in the election but, overall, I agree she is more of a liability.

09:2790054Well its true she is not terribly likeable, she has a tendency to rattle on like a pneumatic drill but somebody in the Conservative Party must like her as she has had a very hi-profile past 12 months, selected often to be the face and voice of the Conservative Party on television.
I believe she even brought up the plight of Muslims in Britain with the Pope when he visited. Not sure if this is/was a good move or an embarassing one.
However to be fair she is the very first muslim woman to reach such political heights and I suppose her own community, her own people, would want her to speak out. Her speech would have been passed by David Cameron's team Im sure. So she is fully endorsed. But then the cOnservatives have to embrace all sections of the community not just the traditionalists.
