Not keen on the idea in public parks although in areas of high density housing with most people not having a garden I can understand why.

In Oz they have BBQs in many of their parks, you just take the fuel and food (and usually something to wash it down with).
Never seems to be a problem; near to where my sister lives in Sydney is Lane Cove River Park and we've been there for a bbq.
