i reckon this would be popular here too, well meaning people get conned into parting with money when a tiny fraction actually goes to the worthy cause.

I feel that they should be banned from collecting entirely with maybe one day of the year put down on the calendar as 'Chuggers Day'.

First they came for the chuggers and I did nothing.........
Whose next? Smokers? Local charity collectors?
I detest these chuggers as much as the next person but banning could be a slippery slope.

quite a difference between the standard charity collector who just stand there rattling a box or tin and the ones with tabards that approach people and try to get their bank details.

I agree Howard but local officials inevitably see things differently to most sane humans. There are alot of things I'd like to see banned in our high street the giant telly being very near the top of the list but that's another story.

Chuggers give bona fide charity collectors a bad name, do any of our forumites remember the Sally Bash collecting for the 'Warcry' magazine?

Over the years I have arranged a number of charity collections in the town i.e. tin rattling. On every occasion it was necessary to obtain permission from DDC who would issue a licence under the Factories and Street Collections Act. One of the rules incidentaly was that collectors should be at least 25m apart.
Perhaps chuggers should be licensed and obey the same rules.

that's muddied the waters i just assumed that everyone had a street licence.
then the question is who goes around checking, ideally the police but it may be council officers.

howard;
in answer to your question it's the council.
with regard to the general terms, those that are responsible tin rattlers good on them .
but these others that howard refers tio get a big cut of the money(well there company does).
to explain further;
st johns ambulance decided to have a private collect d/d on the doorstep
this private company got 25% of any d/d in the first 3 years reducing year on year
this private company could afford to own homes across the country by the millions they were raking in.
when i used to give to charity i was under the impression nearly 100% went to the charity sadly thats far from the truth.
red cross was another that decided to use a private compan rather than spend dosh on tv adverts.
you get told by this company that they dont take a cut
but in reality they are given millions a year money that red cross would have used on tv advertising.
the private companies cllecting for red cross also owned homes across the uk.
now when you give to charity in the street i always thought thats w-here it went
i now look a lot closer before i give to charity
i dont wish to line the pockets of some private company

interesting post keith the situation is much worse with the chuggers who cream off most of the money.
i was told a few years back that only the r.n.l.i. got all monies paid in, good news as they are my chosen charity, the rest have to pay out for london offices so very little goes to good causes.
locally we have the age uk shop which is totally volunteer run so all profits go direct to riverside.

Terry that is what I say to them....You are too close together and watch thier faces as they obviously know the rules and are flouting them.
I just say you are too close to each other and they dont seem to want to talk to me anymore.Works for me!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
