When I worked in the docks for what was then Townsend Thoresen in the 80's, I used to keep a day trip ticket in reserve, as we had to apply for them a few days in advance. If rough weather came up like this it was great fun to have a trip on one of the smaller ferries. The FE1 was quite horrendous, better than a ride in a theme park ! I remember the captains announcement advising passengers to remain seated. Sometimes we had to wait a couple of extra hours to enter port but as long as the bar stayed open ( at crew prices ) we never complained.
