Every year I attend 2/3 financial conferences and have just got back from a 2 day event at Gatwick with 100 top financial advisers and industry speakers.

Something different in the speeches this year, very different. Normally politics is avoided, yes discussion of budgetary and economic matters take place but not in any way political. There is usually a great deal of talk about new Government initiatives and policies and the impact on our clients, not this year.

This year just about every speaker was telling a joke or two at the expense of Gordon Brown. His financial sector and economic policies rubbished as never before. I have never heard such scorn and contempt expressed for any PM in a business environment before. Not in 20 years of attending this kind of thing.

Conversely there was a great deal of serious discussion of what an incoming Conservative Government will do within 12 months. Speaker after speaker was dropping George Osborne's name, referring to meetings to discuss policy issues and all lobbying by retail financial industry groups is now targeted at the Conservatives, Labour are now ignored in that way. It was the impact of Conservative policies that featured.

A great deal of discussion was had about the rebuilding of the economy based on a renewed savings and investment culture, instead of one of debt - referring to a recent and important speech by Osborne.

    The wind has changed direction.
