National Service is not much use to the armed forces as by the time someone is half trained in this technological age, it is time for them to go. They would not be happy to receive recruits from all across society as in the past, let alone just the yobboes.

The army used to take the vast majority of National Servicemen. Quite possibly the nasty pieces of work we propose to send them might come out with new skills in how to attack people and physically fitter to boot. Some of the main complaints the general populace have about the youth of today are about drunken behaviour and fighting. I seem to recall that, when the army was based in Dover, the squaddies had something of a reputation for doing just that.

Prison or a Young Offenders institution are a waste of time as well as they get to mix with their own kind and learn the whole gamut of criminal behaviour in a finishing school for criminals.

Perhaps some sort of civilian labour corps might be the answer, with hardcase instructors who shout at them a lot.

A comedian on TV the other night made the point that since it is the older generation who are always so keen on reintroducing National Service, perhaps it is them who should be called up.
