About twenty minutes ago an armed convoy came up the York street bypass and headed up past the town hall and off up London Road. There was a whole sequence of motorcycle outriders, Range Rovers, a white van with blacked out windows and tailed by a 4x4 also with blacked-out windows and a further motorcycle. All had lights flashing and were driven by men in helmets and flak jackets.
I've never seen such protection - not even for the PM or a Royal. Any ideas who it could have been? A foreign dignitory? Extradition? Witness?
I wonder why they came through the centre of town instead of up Jubilee Way?

Saw the same thing in Castle Street. I know that the anti terrorist branch of the Met Police are using Connaught Barracks from time to time.

Yes, I think one of the Range Rovers was marked as the Met. It was like something from an American thriller movie.

if it was the anti terrorist chaps going up to connaught for an exercise they could just travel normally incognito, nobody would know.
this method can only attract unwanted attention.

On reflection, probably all part of the training.

Saw a similar convoy on the M2 coastbound yesterday. There were certainly Met Police cars at Connaught Barracks today, so the site is obviously being used for something. One wonders if there will be a lot of training for security, etc. in the run up to the Olympics.

Well, I don't think it's a state secret, but I have been at Fort Burgoyne in the past few weeks when the Met and others have been training at the barracks.
Good fun it was too!
Terry
ps If it is a state secret then you may never hear from me again. On the other hand this might be deleted.

Sorry for any alarm caused only I asked for my bins to be delivered this week I certainly didn't expect an armed escort for a mere five bins. Next time I'll ask them to be a little more discreet in their delivery.

Following a brief conversation with a Met officer filling his patrol car with fuel, I can confirm that the Met are using Connaught Barracks as a training base for various squads including anti-terrorist during the run-up to the Olympics. It's a 'permanent' arrangement so we shall see activity there from time to time.

Well, I suppose they have to train somewhere. Does seem a bit odd though.

If they train in their own area it all goes awry when they get caught in traffic !
