21:2239039It seems that every website on earth is talking about the new Apple iPad and I felt kinda left out that we weren't talking about it on here. Not to be outdone by the rest of the world, I am bringing it up on here so we can all feel deeply involved in the discussion about this new uber-gadget. Never heard of it? Check this link:

Question is, will anyone actually buy one? If you watch the video on the web page above (not the keynote video, but the other one that just says "Watch the Video") then you will have to agree that it is astonishing. Visually very sleek and eye-poppingly sexy, it looks like something from a million years in the future except it's here now. The level of interaction is utterly amazing, and it looks so "human friendly" that, as they rightly say in the video, people will just instinctively know how to use it right out of the box.
It does look like an oversized iPhone or iPod Touch (both of those are STILL the best pocket-size gadgets ever made) but at the size of a magazine, and probably as thick as one too, holding it to read the web and do stuff looks like a genuine delight. I've often wondered what device will come out that kills off the "desk" in "desktop computing" and I reckon this is it.
Well, I'm sold. Best I start saving up. Anyone else joining me in the queue when it comes out?

21:4339040Well, I don't think it can multitask, backlit will be uncomfortable on the eye, wouldn't like to read it in the bath (!), will probably cost £300-400, too easily nick-able

Been nice knowing you :)

22:2939047I've been reading about it today, think my opinion is pretty much the same as Paul's at present.

11:5039070An interesting gizmo to be sure. Apparently it weighs in at around 1.5 lbs, will have a battery life of 10 hours (yeah right) and will have an optional stand and external keyboard. This will make it competitive with current notebook style laptops as far as portability goes. As for price... I think Paul's £300-£400 is a bit conservative and will probably hit the streets at around £800 sometime in the summer over here. I, like many others no doubt, would like to at least see one "in the flesh" as it were.
It certainly wouldn't be a replacement for my desktop or laptop at present.

19:5039105All sounds wonderful.
As you say about the price Phil, I think I saw on the web site $4oo.
No doubt we will have to pay well over the odds for it over here.

20:4639112Come on folks it is a "duplo" version of the i-phone with no phone
Frankly major fail
wont be the first for Apple - anyone remember the Lisa or the Newton
Of course the Appletards and fanboyz will all be queuing for them when they go on sale because Saint Steve has said it is great.

22:2339124Thanks to an argument between Apple and Adobe, it doesn't work with Flash content. Ridiculous. I take it all back. Without FLash content, the thing is bloody useless.

Well I got my hands on one yesterday, I didn't think I was going to like it having decided not to get an I phone (I got a HTC which had better reviews instead), but I have to say after having a play around with it, I was very impressed. It's not mine, my friend bought it back from the USA.

apparently a million have already been sold in the states.
Need a very big pocket, or a manbag for one of those!
Interesting to note that Steve Jobs, when younger, was an acolyte of the founder of Intel, Robert Noyce. Noyce is rightly seen by many as the founder of Silicon Valley and there are direct links from his organisation and circle of friends to organisations such as Google and Apple of course.
If one man has changed our world for the better more than Noyce in the last 50 years, I'd like to know who he is.

Not sure what use I would have for one. A pc in the office, a Blackberry for day to use when out and about, a netbook for when I am in need of a bit more computing power than my Blackberry when out - where does one of these fit in?
Barry, this is just a leisure gadget for tech geeks. In other words, chaps like me! It plays music, movies, reads books, and plays games. There are a number of "serious" apps for it such as accounting and maps etc but having seen many of the apps on the iPod I seriously question the actual usefulness of the serious apps. I was interested in gettign one but ended up buying a MacBook instead which I think will be far more useful.
Looks really interesting, I cant think of a use myself for one, but would like to get hold of one to have a play! (I am a tech geek!!)
I am the same as Barry, my blackberry does most of the things i want whilst on the move, and i have a netbook if i need that bit extra...........
be interesting to hear if Jeane has any more comments on it after a good play??
Jeane, thanks, but reckon I'll go for the manbag personally.

I enjoyed my 'play' but as for any real practical use hmmm.....I have a net book, laptop, pc and phone so I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy one but having said that if my friend got tired of it I'd take it off his hands! It's easy to use but seems to need charging a lot and it accidently reverted to the factory setting once.
Lol Sid

Perhaps this is just a commercial ploy by Apple to recoup some of the heavy investment in a techological future we don't yet see?
