The Liberal Democrats slumped to a dismal sixth place in the Barnsley Central by-election on Friday morning, as Labour strolled to an easy win in one of its safest seats.

Nick Clegg's party finished second in the Yorkshire seat in last May's general election, but ended up last night trailing behind Labour, UK Independence Party, Conservatives, British National Party and a local Independent.

Dan Jarvis, a former paratrooper who served in Afghanistan, strolled to an easy victory for Labour, winning 14,774 votes - 60.9 per cent of the total. He claimed that the people of Barnsley had rejected the coalition's programme of cuts.

Mr Jarvis claimed voters were punishing the coalition for "broken promises" and compared the government's spending cuts with those of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s: "Thatcher was wrong and Cameron is wrong now," he said.

It was a good night for a jubilant UKIP who polled 2,953 which beat the Conservatives with 1,999, but the bigger humiliation was for the Liberal Democrats who polled just 1,012 and lost their deposit
