  By the way, I was informed last year that gloss paints are no longer allowed to be sold, by EU decree.
  Not sure whether it is so, but many wood paints nowadays are water-based, such as eggshell, so it probably is true.
  
  Not too sure about metals though, which require different paints. That said, I have used water-based paint on outdoor metal long ago, and it came out alright. But it was not rust-prone metal, though.
  
  Just applying hammerite on iron railings without a specific anti-rust paint beforehand is not advisable.
