The death penalty, years ago, along with transportation, branding, putting in stocks and pillory, saved having to keep people in prisons and feed them.
Stealing from or breaking into people's property, and robbery on the highway, were considered to be most serious crimes, and were capital offences.
Prisons were generally only for remand (usually very short) until the case was heard.
In the old debtors' prison in Dover Castle prisoners there were not fed and their families and friends had to bring them food.
