16:1073133 I`ve been waiting for a nice day, but sadly it`s just to picture another well known pub disappearing from the landscape forever. It`s the `Royal Oak` on the Sandwich road in Whitfield, and has laid derelict for some time now. One of my courting days pubs. Anyone got any info on it?

Planning Application DOV/10/00398.
On DDC Website shows application to demolish existing and for 9 dwellings (on DDC List dated 4th June)
Just gone in to see if granted or not and shows on summary "Invalid Application".

16:3473137 Thank you Pat, sound`s interesting. I wonder if they`ll be bungalow`s or more of these box-like, eyesore, non-architect designed flat`s that spring up these days? The front entrance pictured above, where countless patrons have entered to wine and dine, though I heard in recent years, many under age drinker`s, caused it`s demise?

18:0673150If the licensee was serving alcohol to people under age then surely it would be more his or her fault rather than the kids?

18:1673152Rather sadly, I believe it was one of the few local pubs that had a skittle alley.

18:2573157There's still a fair few skittle alleys around Bob and the Dover league also continues. The Diamond, The Admiral Harvey, The Fox and The Red Lion are just four that spring to mind if you fancy whacking a few down one day!
Sorry I missed you the other day

19:0173164I expect the youngsters kept the place going in the end most likely by playing pool, drinking Coke and eating crisps. You can drink soft drinks, not booze, when under-age.
Sadly too many adults now drink at home as it is so much cheaper, plus drink driving laws slowly killed off many rural pubs like this one.

16:1873525I seem to remember Diane Smallwood(ex mayor) telling me her parents ran this pub and it was where she spent her childhood, I could be mistaken.

16:2576244Just to record for posterity, the whole site was flattened this week so this pub has truly gone forever. Time to dig out any old picture`s from yesteryear. I wonder if anybody bothered saving the sign?
