Having worked variously as a petrol pump attendant, ice cream salesman, taxi driver, lathe operator, turret press operator, production line worker, surveyor's chainman etc I would suggest that even the 'lowliest' job can be done by people like me (and my kids) who have never thought any employment was 'beneath' them and viewed relying on the state when there was work to be done as immoral.
I can also assure you when employing anyone I was much more likely to take on someone on who had been flipping burgers rather than waiting on his/her fat arse for something more 'suitable' to come along! I've found this way of life works in places like the USA with people working long hours and more than one job, proud to provide for their family and accepting responsibility for their actions.
Weber called it the Protestant Work Ethic. I call it not expecting the world to owe me a living (or indeed anything else).
It's in the manual! See 1Timothy 5:8

(& 2Thessalonians 3:10)
