Saw a bit on the news about Animal Rights having threatened import agents (planes and ferries) so they no longer import animals for testing.
Not wishing to open a can of worms on animal testing but what animals do we need to import? Surely it can't be rabbits or mice? Have I missed something?

I heard a little bit about this on R4 this morning Helen. We certainly have all the animals needed here in one way, but it sems it is the continuity of science between one laboratory say in Switzerland and another here, that is vital for progress in research into a cure for some of these tradition diseases...alzeimers and so on.
If one makes progress then the other needs to continue further from where the first one left off, as it were, rather than start from the beginning again. I think this is the point they were making. But all airlines with the exception of 2 smaller ones, and all ferries, they even mentioned Seafrance on Radio 4 so you can see they were on the pace there....all bowing to the new might of social networking. Rightly or wrongly.

Another of these difficult areas, we are told animals have to be used as there are no alternatives.
I suspect there other methods but think this is another issue that will go on,
although for some animal rights is not high on the agenda, it's surprizing the number of people who vote according to candidates in general elections on animal issues.

Thank you Paul for clearing that up they did not mention why on the BBC.
I've never really known an animal rights activist but always wondered if they got really sick, would they refuse the treatment on the basis it was tested on animals?

Well Helen this problem is easily solved for the vast majority of cases as every drug or procedure has been tested on animals...other human beings. So no problems there then.

There was a documentary about animal rights activists on tv a few years ago where one of the staff from Huntingdon Life Sciences was talking about the time they caught some intruders. While they were holding them and waiting for police to arrive one of them had an asthma attack and used her inhaler - the staff told her that was one that had been safety tested by them.

Yes Ray, all very well, but...
Did they go on to say that it was found wanting as to safety and was extensively re-jigged to be fit for use?

What saved lives Ray?
a)The drug?
b)Safety testing?
c)The requirement for animal testing?

I am in favour of animal welfare but even the expression 'animal rights' is as bonkers as the extremists who spout their rubbish.
I think that';s the semantic difference. Welfare of animals is very important and they have a right to decent management and a good environment - it muddies the waters to claim additional rights. As a veggie I would prefer us not to kill animals just for food, but that is going to happen, so the next best thing is to make sure they are well treated and that their welfare is a priority. Just being pragmatic!
